We know that God’s promises are “yes and amen”; but how do we activate them in our lives to change the lives around us for the kingdom? That’s today’s message “Producing Promise” in our “Change Your City” series.
The reasons why Jesus was able to change His city
  • Connected to the God
  • Connected to Community
  • Connected to Calling
The disciples were able to change their cities because
  • Connected to the God
  • Connected to Community
  • Connected to Calling
We are hyper-focusing on what it means to be connected to God today
There were times Jesus chose solitude over people just to pray.
We are looking at the reasons why we need to choose solitude and prayer to stay connected to God
To prepare for something big
Luke 4:1-2, 14-15.
Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,[a] 2 where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region. 15 He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
Jesus was preparing for His public ministry. Prayer is how we prepare.
To rest after hard work
Mark 6:30-32
30 The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. 31 Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. 32 So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone.
Jesus sent the 12 disciples out. They returned and Jesus had them rest. This represents Church. We work during the week, and then rest on Sunday to go work next week. We rest to prepare.
To grieve
Matthew 14:1-13
14 When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee,[a] heard about Jesus, 2 he said to his advisers, “This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles.” 3 For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip). 4 John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry her.” 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet. 6 But at a birthday party for Herod, Herodias’s daughter performed a dance that greatly pleased him, 7 so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted. 8 At her mother’s urging, the girl said, “I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!” 9 Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders. 10 So John was beheaded in the prison, 11 and his head was brought on a tray and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. 12 Later, John’s disciples came for his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus what had happened. 13 As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns.
John the Baptist was beheaded – Jesus went away to grieve.
Before making an important decision
Luke 6:12-13.
12 One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. 13 At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Here are their names:
Jesus prayed all night before making a huge decision.
During Crisis
Luke 22:39-44
39 Then, accompanied by the disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives. 40 There he told them, “Pray that you will not give in to temptation.” 41 He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” 43 Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. 44 He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.
Jesus knew the crisis situation he was in and what was about to happen. He prayed before and during crises.
Doing Life Together –
How do you handle stress? What do you do well and do bad? What’s a recent stressor you are going through?  What does this verse mean to you?
Dealing with stress poorly costs us (time, mental health, energy) in order to see promises producing in our lives we need to be able to handle stress.
Producing Promise
Luke 5:16
16 But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.
Jesus spent time alone praying in solitude in order to produce promise.
Next Steps: Pray daily this week. Pick a topic from today and speak with God daily to grow in that area.

Acts 2: 1-11

1“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

11 we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

So what does HOPE mean to you? What we just read is the ending of isolation and separation from the Holy Spirit to Creation. What does HOPE mean to you? To the Holy Spirit, Hope was Jesus. Our sermon series “Can’t Cancel Hope” has been about people stuck in places – holes, caves, boats, isolation… They are separated and we have studied how they kept or found their hope and the actions they took to do so; and how we can apply that to our lives today.

Follow along with Pastor Matt here:

Genesis 1:2

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters

HOPE IS THE ANSWER TO CIRCUMSTANCE

Hebrews 6:19

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,”

The Holy spirit came to do 3 things

1 – Heal Our Brokenness

John 14:26

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

You cannot be healed when you are denial or in love with your brokenness.

2 – Fills Us Up

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

3 – Pours Out Love

Luke 12:12

The Holy Spirit will give you the words to say at the moment when you need them.

Acts 2

11 we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

The Holy Spirit could have chosen any place and time to show up in the world after Jesus died on the cross, but He chose Acts 2…. Why? the answer is in the first verse.

Acts 2:1 (KJV)

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

The Holy Spirit showed up in the middle of a unified people of all races.

to say…

  • My entire existence is for unity.
  • To bring unity from people to people.
  • To bring unity from people to God.
  • And to bring unity from God to people.

Historically, the move of the Holy Spirit is greatest on this day – Pentecost. I challenge you… I dare you! Show love to people that you might not be unified with.

We need the Holy Spirit because we need unity!

How to Have Hope When You Feel Forgotten https://www.lighthouse805.com/podcast/how-to-have-hope-when-you-feel-forgotten/ Sun, 03 May 2020 23:48:35 +0000 https://www.lighthouse805.com/?post_type=podcast&p=2435 The post How to Have Hope When You Feel Forgotten appeared first on Lighthouse 805 Church.

When you feel forgotten it’s pretty easy to panic, give into doubts, or feel lost. All those things can also make us want to give up or give in. In this Can’t Cancel Hope series we are looking at different seasons in our lives when we need to be tethered and connected to HOPE. Like an anchor. During this series we will explore characters in the Bible that have found themselves in caves, caverns and dark places.

This second message “How to have hope when you feel forgotten” looks at 2 things: 1) How to prevent feeling forgotten when we’re in a season; and 2) How to find hope when we do feel forgotten. Feeling forgotten can cause us to make stupid decisions. One person who didn’t make stupid decisions when he felt forgotten was Noah – A man who heard God say build a boat.

Follow along with Pastor Matt here:

Genesis 7:1-5
The Lord then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation. 2 Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, 3 and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth. 4 Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.”5 And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.”

1. How to prevent feeling forgotten during seasons of life…

  • God’s pattern is to speak, then test.
  • The #1 time we feel forgotten by God, by people, by life – is when we are in seasons of testing.
  • What do you do in the wait?

Genesis 7:5
And Noah did ALL that the Lord commanded him.

How To Prevent Feeling Forgotten –

  • Know what He said
  • Do what He said
  • Follow Through in what He said

2. How do I get hope when I feel forgotten?

Genesis 8:1
But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.

God remembered Noah.
• Focus on your destination not your situation.

Hebrews 6:19

This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.

  • Pivot our mind, heart, and emotions through prayer.
  • When we are lost in our situation and cant find a clear path to our destination…. we need a pivot prayer.

What are Prayers that Pivot?

1 – Genuine
2 – Personal
3 – Simple

What is your action step today?
What are you doing that God has spoken to you about?

Do not let another day go by without acting on what God is speaking to you about.
