Our Great and Awesome God
Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.” Genesis 18:20-21
Here, the Lord and two angels meets with Abraham. After talking to the Lord, Abraham knows the likely judgment facing Sodom and Gomorrah, which would then include his nephew Lot and family. Abraham intercedes on their behalf and the Lord agrees not to destroy the city and its people if just 10 righteous people are found there. But the sin in the city is so great and the number of righteous is just one, Lot. So the destruction is imminent. For all the years Lot lived in Sodom, apparently no one living there believed in the Lord. The draw of sin and desires of the flesh ruled their lives. We can only speculate why Lot remained in Sodom all these years. Regardless, Lot was removed from the path of destruction. God destroyed the wickedness, but spared the righteous. In this story we see so much of God, His mercy and compassion, His power and might, and His impartiality and judgment. How great and awesome is our God.!
