Growing in Christ
Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. Hebrews 6:1-2
The writer of Hebrews faulted the Hebrews for not growing in maturity in Christ. They were still babes in the faith. Why didn’t they grow? Because they stopped trying to understand what was being taught. The saying that if you don’t use it, you lose it, is applicable to growing in Christ. The Hebrews not only didn’t grow, they regressed to where they had to be taught the elementary truths again. Learning is a dynamic process. You take in what’s taught, then do what’s taught together (discipleship), then you do it on your own. At that point you are ready to teach it to someone else, the disciple becomes a mentor. Trust the Holy Spirit and work at it. You can do it.
