Consecrated for God
He then presented the other ram, the ram for the ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. Leviticus 8:22-23
Moses is in the process of consecrating Aaron and his sons for service as priests in God’s tabernacle. The blood was used to consecrate Aaron to become a representative of God to His service. Service to God requires all of Aaron, his entire body, his total self, dedicated to God. The ear, thumb, and big toe represent his entire body. That he would be pure in his words which are judged by hearing, the ear. But also that he would listen to God. That he would be pure in action, symbolized by his hand/thumb. But also that hands would be lifted up to worship God. That his pilgrimage of life would be fully to service God, represented by his feet/big toe. Christians are consecrated, set apart for service to our Lord and Savior. We may not have had a special ceremony to consecrate us with blood on our ear, thumb, and big toe, but if Jesus is your Lord and Savior, He did something more. He washed us, our whole being, our sins were washed in His blood. Let us live that each day with pure words, actions, and journey through life.
