Behold the Hand of God.
The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ ” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained. Judges 7:2-3
The Spirit of the Lord fills Gideon as he summons men from other tribes to fight against the Midianites forces. Gideon has 32,000 men versus 135,000 troops with the Midianites. But God says Gideon has too many men, so He winnows Gideon’s army by 22,000. With 10,000 men remaining, God says Gideon still has too many men, that they would think victory would be their own doing. Another round of winnowing directed by God leaves Gideon with 300 men. A victory by Gideon could only come by God’s hand, and so it does. God gives Gideon a stunning victory. Most people would mention the fleece when asked what miracle God performed concerning Gideon. What God did to Midian’s troops was the real miracle. When Gideon’s 300 men blew trumpets and smashed jars, the Midianites turned on each other. When we are at our weakest, when the odds look overwhelming, when there is no light at the end of the tunnel, remember God and Gideon’s men. You could be like the children of Israel at the Red Sea – Behold the hand of God!
